Japan runs 18 consular offices in the United States: an embassy, 14 consulates general and three consular offices, in Anchorage, Portland and Saipan. It is the densest career network of any country we cover. Twenty-two honorary consuls sit alongside them, and they do something quite different.
The consular map has three units that are not covered by one office. California and Connecticut are divided by ZIP code, which is why Bakersfield is served from San Francisco 281 miles away while Palmdale, further north, is served from Los Angeles. And Idaho is split between Portland and Seattle along a line that neither office publishes.
The two most searched questions about Japanese consulates in this country are both about visas, and for a U.S. passport holder going as a tourist the answer to both is that there is nothing to apply for: no visa is needed for stays under 90 days. Our guides to who needs a visa and to the Japan eVISA explain where the exemption stops.
The jurisdiction PDF that all seventeen consulates link is dated 2015, and four of its addresses are out of date: Boston and Detroit have both moved, and so has Seattle. It also lists the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in the same table as the consulates, and the Mission does no consular work at all.
There is no single national booking system: each office publishes its own procedure, and the visa section usually keeps a separate inbox from the consular section. Our page on how each office takes appointments has them side by side, and fees and requirements covers the July 2026 fee revision and who is exempt from it.
Where the Japanese offices are
Here are all the Japanese consulates in the United States
The embassy and the fourteen consulates general issue passports, visas, certificates and family register entries. A consular office is a smaller category with a narrower range, and an honorary consulate issues nothing at all.
The three consular offices
Anchorage, Portland and Saipan are consular offices rather than consulates general. They handle a narrower range of services, and Saipan is the only Japanese post in the country that reports to another consulate rather than to the embassy.
The 22 honorary consulates
An honorary consul assists Japanese residents locally and supports cultural work. In the words of the Consulate General in Chicago, they do not issue passports or visas and are not authorised to notarise documents. For that, the file goes to the consulate general that supervises them.
Other cities
There is no Japanese consulate in most American cities. These have a page of their own: which office covers them, how far away it is, and what can be settled without going.
